Preview: Hear it

The first chick pecked its way out of the egg. Two days later, Mattie hatched. Mattie was much smaller than her sister. The older chick didnt like the idea of another chick in the nest. She pecked at her small sister. Mattie peeped sadly. When the parents dropped food into the nest, the bigger chick ate most of it. Sometimes, Mattie didnt get any food at all. The firstborn chick grew stronger every day. And Mattie grew weaker. She could not hold up her head. Usually, a weak, undersized chick will die within ten days. But at the end of two weeks, Mattie was still alive. Mattie began to peep louder. Sometimes she squawked for food.
